After dealing with the freezing temperatures outside, the last thing you want to do is walk into your home and find no relief. Cold air has sneaky ways to seep into your home, but luckily there are some easy ways to keep your home warm all winter long. Follow these tips to keep your home nice and toasty!

  • Secure all locks along your windows and clamp them down as much as you can.
  • Seal windows that won’t be opened until spring with temporary caulking.
  • Install a door sweep along exterior doors.
  • Put up thick curtains. Consider some that incorporate thermal lining for extra insulation.
  • Seal gaps between doors and side camps with weather stripping.
  • Use chimney balloons to keep cold air from entering and warm air from escaping.
  • Close the doors on unused rooms.
  • Use a rug on bare floors  since it can account for 10% of heat loss in a home.
  • Use silicone-based filler on any cracks in the flooring.
  • Insulate attics with foam insulation.
  • Hang pictures or mirrors on exterior walls – this helps insulate walls from the outside air.
  • Let in the sunlight during the day for natural heat.
  • Shower with the door open to let warm, steamy air travel throughout your home.
  • Use a programmable thermostat to save 10% a year on heating & cooling costs.
  • Turn your fan clockwise to push heat back down into your room.
