Winter Storm Survival Guide

By January 4, 2018October 2nd, 2018Uncategorized, Winter

Are you ready for the “Bomb Cyclone” of winter weather that is taking over the east coast? A significant winter storm can be a huge threat, and people should take action now. With these types of conditions, we encourage everyone to be prepared and stay safe. One of the primary concerns is the loss of power, heat and communications, sometimes for days at a time. Making sure you’re prepared for a winter emergency will help ensure the safety and comfort of your family. Here are the best ways to stay prepared for extreme winter weather:

  • Winterize your vehicle and keep the gas tank full. A full tank will keep the fuel line from freezing.
  • Insulate your home by installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic from the inside to keep the cold air out.
  • Put together a supply kit with water, food, a flashlight with extra batteries, a first-aid kit, medications, a portable radio and alternate heating methods.
  • Avoid frozen pipes by running the water to help prevent them from freezing.
  • Avoid driving when conditions include sleet, freezing rain and snow. If travel is necessary, keep a supply kit in your car.
  • Protect yourself from frostbite and hypothermia by wearing warm, loose-fitting clothing in several layers. Stay indoors, if possible.
  • Maintain heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected.
  • Turn off space heaters and make sure fireplace embers are out before leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Check that you have sufficient heating fuel for your generator and/or enough wood for your fireplace.
  • Never bring a generator indoors and be sure to connect appliances to it only using heavy duty cords.
